How to Make December Fun and Safe for Your Australian Labradoodle
While you’re enjoying gingerbread cookies, chocolates, and gifts, it’s important to consider what this festive period means for your Labradoodle. December may be a month of celebration for you, but for your dog, it can bring chaos, unexpected visitors, and potentially dangerous treats. With a few smart tips, you can ensure your furry friend not only stays safe but also enjoys the holiday season.
Keep Chocolate and Other Treats Out of Reach
Gingerbread cookies and chocolates may be irresistible to you, but they are a big no-no for dogs. Chocolate contains theobromine, which is toxic to dogs. Even a small amount can be harmful. Similarly, raisins in holiday pastries like fruitcakes are dangerous for dogs. Store treats securely and be mindful of what children might leave lying around. An excited Labradoodle can snatch up a piece of chocolate off the floor faster than you can blink! If your dog eats something hazardous, contact your vet immediately.
Create a Quiet Space for Your Dog
From grandma dropping off gifts to friends stopping by for a festive meal, the holidays often bring extra visitors. This can be overwhelming for your dog. Ensure your Labradoodle has a quiet retreat where they can relax when things get too hectic. A bed in a separate room or a cozy corner works perfectly. Let guests know that this is your dog’s chill zone, where they can unwind undisturbed, perhaps with or without Christmas music.
Watch Out for Overexcited Kids
The festive mood and sugary treats can make children extra energetic (read: hyper!), which can get on your Labradoodle’s nerves. Your dog may show signs of stress by yawning, softly growling, or walking away to seek peace. Teach children to interact calmly and respectfully with your dog, especially during activities like unwrapping gifts or enjoying holiday treats. Keep an eye out to prevent kids from accidentally dropping food or playing too roughly with your furry friend.
Involve Your Dog in the Festivities
Let your Labradoodle join in on the fun. Treat them to a special dog snack while you enjoy your Christmas dessert, or let them “unwrap” gifts using paw-safe wrapping paper—free from glitter, dyes, or coatings. A new toy or a tasty chew bone under the tree will be a delightful surprise for your loyal companion. Just make sure your Christmas tree is stable and decorations are out of reach of curious paws. This way, everyone can enjoy the holidays safely.
