Helping Your Australian Labradoodle Puppy Get Used to Fireworks

The holidays may still seem far away, but for your puppy this is actually a great time to start getting used to new sounds. Fireworks can be exciting or even scary, especially for a puppy who is just beginning to discover the world. By practicing calmly and step by step now, you reduce the chance that your pup will be frightened by fireworks later on. ALAEU is happy to explain how you can approach this.

Start with Soft Sounds

You can gently introduce your puppy to fireworks by playing fireworks sounds very softly—so softly that you can barely hear them. Your pup doesn’t need to react; the sounds can simply play in the background while everything at home goes on as usual. This helps him learn that the sound is nothing to worry about. Make the environment pleasant with something he enjoys, such as a snuffle mat, chew treat, toy, or simply your presence. The more pleasant the atmosphere, the more positively he will experience the sounds.

Build Up Slowly

If your pup stays relaxed, you can carefully increase the volume a little after a few sessions. Always pay attention to his body language. A comfortable puppy moves calmly, has a loose posture, and looks around in a relaxed way. If you notice slight hesitation—such as ears going slightly back or briefly stopping play—stay at that level. If he becomes truly tense, like whining, panting, or trying to hide, turn the volume down right away. This is not a setback, but exactly how you respect his pace.

Relaxing Together

If you occasionally hear a pop or bang outside, calm activities can help reduce tension. Chewing is often soothing, but cuddling up close to you can be just as comforting. You don’t need to do anything special; staying calm together is usually enough. Puppies are very sensitive to your mood. When you remain calm and respond in a friendly way, it reassures him that everything is fine. If you behave in a relaxed, natural way as if the sounds are normal, your puppy will often mirror that feeling.

When Extra Support Can Help

Despite good preparation, some puppies may still find fireworks stressful. In that case, having a certified behavior specialist take a look can be helpful. A small adjustment to your approach or a few new insights can make a big difference. For some pups, a personalized guidance program is a great addition. A good trainer will help your puppy learn to cope with new sounds step by step, in a safe and positive way. This can be the extra bit of support that gives both of you more confidence.
