Tips for proper coat care
When you think of the Australian Labradoodle, its distinctive coat quickly comes to mind. However, this coat often requires proper care to remain beautiful and healthy. The wavy or curly coat needs regular attention to stay in optimal condition. How do you achieve this? By washing, blowing, brushing, and trimming! Here are some essential tips for proper coat care that you should know!
Regular and Thorough Brushing
To prevent tangles, it's crucial to brush the coat thoroughly once or twice a month. This helps keep the coat tangle-free. Pay extra attention to areas like the groin, armpits, and neck. You can use a universal brush with curved stainless steel pins and a springy base for this purpose. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to brush your Labradoodle's entire body. And a quick tip for when you're done: spritz the coat with a plant mister to quickly revive its waves or curls.
After Brushing: Bath Time!
Washing the coat with a special dog shampoo cleans the hair and opens the hair cuticles. After washing, use a nourishing cream to protect the skin and hair, and to seal the hair cuticles. This reduces tangling and keeps the coat looking beautiful for longer.
Trimming
Like humans, Labradoodles shed. Loose hairs often get trapped in the coat. Don't blow or brush them out, as this can cause mats or tangles. The coat grows about a centimeter per month. To prevent matting, it's essential to take timely action and care for the coat properly. Remember, the longer the coat, the more maintenance it requires. Regular trimming to the desired length can make maintenance easier. You can enlist the help of a professional trimmer for this. The advantage is that you won't have to do the work yourself, and you can be sure your Labradoodle is trimmed properly. However, this service comes at a cost. With the right tools and patience, you can also do it yourself; a proper grooming session, including washing, can take up to four hours.
